Bathroom Renovation in Whitchurch (Cardiff)

Overview

Zeus Renovations recently undertook a stunning bathroom renovation for homeowners in Whitchurch, Cardiff. When we first visited the home to assess the homeowners’ requirements, we found a layout common in homes from that era: a small bathroom on the landing, with the toilet in its own separate room next door.

The family wanted to completely renovate the bathroom and merge the two rooms into one large bathroom. They also wanted to elevate the aesthetic to a modern, spa-like feel and address an ongoing leak that was spreading to the downstairs ceiling.

Over 2-3 weeks, we completed the renovation while the family stayed at home. We knocked down the partition wall, joined the rooms, and uplifted the aesthetic to meet the homeowners’ requirements. Below are the problems we faced, the process, and the final outcome.

The Problem

Before the renovation, the legacy bathroom was outdated and suffering from mould issues caused by poor ventilation and an undiagnosed leak in the shower system.

Poor ventilation meant steam from the bath and shower had nowhere to go, and black mould had built up across the ceiling. Add tired tiles and fittings, plus a stud wall that left both rooms feeling cramped, and the family were ready for a change.

The homeowners also wanted to improve the bathroom’s functionality by adding a dedicated shower unit and a freestanding bath, rather than their existing bath/shower combi unit.

To create space, they wanted to knock down the wall separating the bathroom from the toilet room. They also wanted to improve ventilation by adding extraction units, so the newly renovated bathroom wouldn’t have ventilation issues.

The Process

Opening Up the Space and Replacing the Joists

To start the renovation, we stripped the two rooms back to the brick and removed the non-structural stud partition between them.

New Plumbing, Electrics and Ventilation

Once the room was stripped back to the foundations, we brought in a qualified, WaterSafe-registered plumber and a NAPIT-registered electrician to complete the necessary plumbing and electrical reconfigurations. Much of the plumbing needed to be renewed to accommodate the customer’s new bathroom layout.

Plastering and Tiling

Louis, owner of Zeus Renovations with 15 years of trade experience, prepared the walls and ceiling and reskimmed the whole room himself. We waterproofed the shower area before tiling.

Grey tiles run halfway up the walls, while slatted wood-effect tiles run floor to ceiling in the shower, following the roofline slope. We tiled the floor, and our painter finished the walls and ceiling in a beautiful sage green colour.

Fixtures and Finishing Touches

For the new shower unit, we installed a black-framed glass screen, a rainfall shower head and two recessed niches built into the wall for storage.

We also installed a luxurious freestanding bath, a wood-effect vanity unit with a countertop basin, a backlit LED mirror, and a wall-mounted electric toothbrush holder. New radiators and a custom LED-lit shelf above the toilet finish the room.

The End Result

In 2-3 weeks, we transformed an old, outdated bathroom into a highly functional space with a contemporary, spa-like aesthetic. The sage green walls, warm wood-effect tiles and matt black fittings give the family the spa feel they asked for, while the niches, shelves and vanity drawers keep everyday clutter out of sight.

In addition to elevating the bathroom’s modern aesthetic, we also addressed the underlying ventilation and leak issues that caused mould in the previous setup. These issues haven’t come back since the renovation was engineered to future-proof the bathroom.
